I want you to think about what it is like to take a really long road trip. Say your friends and yourself are traveling all night long to get to your favorite destination to party one last time before the summer is over. On your drive of drinking sodas and eating Funyuns, it occurs to me that someone in said car is going to have to go to the bathroom. This stop requires the driver to find a gas station that is open for 24 hours. Relatively on the highway, it is not that difficult to find something that is open 24/7, 365 days a year. 366 in a leap year. It has become something that all drivers have become accustomed to. That being said, I want you to think how it would be if say, you couldn’t find a gas station open 24 hours. I bet that you would be wishing that you were able to find one and in a hurry.
As you read this scenario, I bet you wondered what in the world does this have to do with anything. It is simple. The human mind is just like those gas stations. Once you come to one that is open, it becomes a warm feeling. Something that you want around you because it will brighten the world around you. If you come to one that is closed, it just makes you angry and you move on. The mind is the same way. I am in shock that in this country, we still have as many closed minded people as we do. You would think that over time the theory of evolution would finally kick in and cause people to be more open about race, gender, sexual orientation, and just trying new things.
I turn on the news and see the ongoing negative news reports coming out of Ferguson. I didn’t realize that skin color was still an issue. Did the 1950s and 60s not teach us anything? I think there is one phrase that comes to mind watching all of this and that is “grow up!” I know that there are bad people everywhere. It does not matter what color your skin is. What does matter is that you have the morals to be a citizen that younger generations can look up too. I don’t care if you’re white, black, Hispanic, Asian, French, Canadian, or even Martian, WE ARE ALL EQUAL. Let me repeat that for the people that are so set in their ways, they couldn’t tell right from wrong, if it bit them in the ass. WE ARE ALL EQUAL. We have the choice to make decisions, whether it be right or wrong. We have a choice. What happened in Ferguson is a tragedy and we cannot change the events of the past. However, we can make the future a better place if one person has just realized what is really happening everything would change in the blink of an eye. It is time to stop living like this and understand that we are people. If there is one thing that we all want out of life, it’s happiness.
Speaking of happiness and having a closed mind. Answer me something, why is it so important that a male or female can’t fall in love and want be with a member of the same gender? Before anyone spouts bible verses, at me to tell me how wrong it is for same sex love. I want to throw out a verse of my own:
Deuteronomy 22:19 and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name upon a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife. He may not divorce her all his days.
Deuteronomy 22:29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her all his days.
If there is this uproar about how bad being gay is because the bible says so, why isn’t the same uproar being made if say couples just keep getting divorced? I could be wrong here, but I feel that this is a double standard. Who cares who a person falls in love with? We are all told that we should grow up to find love and spend the rest of our lives with one person. We should not judge anyone in their life. Being gay or being straight does not define who you are unless you are a person who has a mind that is closed all year round. You define who you are, and no one else. I think the old saying is very strong here, you can’t choose who you fall in love with. I have made some horrible dating decisions, we all have. If you say you haven’t, I would like you to share what you are smoking and can you please share some with the rest of the class.
Do we really want to take two steps backwards in all that we have achieved so far in this country? If your answer is yes, chances are that you are reading the wrong article. No one is perfect and if you say you are that can only mean one of two things. You are either Jesus Christ returning to earth or one of the best liars on the planet. I vote for #2. Tomorrow is a new day, instead of hating on someone because of race, gender, or sexual orientation just be friendly. You never know who you are going to make smile, plus we all need more friends. Have you ever seen the movie Pleasantville? Having a closed mind is like living in black and white. Once you notice that there is more to this life than hate, you will see the world in wonderful Technicolor.
