Today, Marvel rolled out its next installment in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). I remember the first time that it was announced that a movie was being made about Ant-Man. I have to say that I was a tad skeptical in seeing the movie. I did not know much about the character other than the fact that it was a man in a suit who can control ants. It did not sound like a good idea to me. I still had my reservations even after Paul Rudd was announced as the lead, and then…. the trailer was released. My excitement for the movie grew and grew. Last night, I was able to take in the first viewing of Ant-Man in my area, and I have to say. I am glad I was wrong. This movie may have been the biggest little surprise in the MCU.
The story begins in with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Howard Stark getting into an argument with Pym leaving. After leaving Howard Stark, Pym started his own lab and tech company. His biggest creation stems around a particle that will shrink a person down to the size of an Ant while wearing the suit. I do believe that may be where the name of the movie came from. (Please hint the sarcasm.) Pym was then voted out of his firm by the board of directors with the final vote being his daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly). The company is then taken over by a man named Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) who hopes to recreate the Pym particle.
Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) was in prison from pulling a heist by the same means as Robin Hood, he stole from the rich and gave to the poor. He served his time and was released from prison. Scott took a normal job working at Baskin Robins to make sure that he was able to see his daughter. He just wanted to be a good influence for his little “peanut.” That does become difficult since his ex-wife played by Judy Greer had moved on to be with a police officer. Once Baskin Robins finds out about Scott’s past, they let him go. He then takes on a sure thing given to him by his friend and former cellmate. The job required breaking into an old man’s house, cracking a safe, and taking what is inside. Scott was disappointed to learn that all the safe had to offer was a “motorcycle suit.” Scott tried on the suit and realized it was something more than a just a normal driving suit. Scott Lang’s life is about to change as Hank Pym selected him to become the next Ant-Man.
Marvel Movies have a way having this air of comedy about them, and Ant-Man is no exception to that rule. Paul Rudd’s writing is phenomenal along with suburb acting with a tremendous cast. I was actually left with a bad taste in my mouth after the second installment of the Avengers, where this movie kind of gave me more hope for the future of the MCU. Also one scene kind of stole the show for myself which featured a battle between Ant-Man and one of The Avengers.
Ant-Man may not be as good as Guardians of the Galaxy, but it holds its own against the other origin films presented so far.
Review: Get off the couch, and go see the movie. Ant-Man is a must watch in the theater.
One other note, stay till the very end of the movie. You will not be disappointed at all.
