It’s been awhile since I inducted into The Hall. And the reason for fewer posts is that of life. Over the past few months, I have battled a crippling bout of depression. I would hope that I would not wake up again. The struggle of always wondering if you are a burden on someone you love is something that weighs on my mind daily. Instead of being able to sit in front of a computer and come up with new content, I would stay in bed. It became a struggle for me to even leave the house. And I know my wife feels helpless seeing me at one of my lowest points. I always caught myself falling back into the same rut over and over. I would watch the same shows, do the same routine, I was a shell of my former self. My seizures also get worse when I just don’t care. I did myself no favors concerning my health.
For the past few months, I knew something had to be done to pull myself out of the depression. And the first thing I did would be find something new to watch on television. But this time I found myself on a medium that seems unlikely to start a turnaround. I found myself on YouTube. Not in the comment section, but the video platform has opened the door for me to find something new occasionally. But this time, something different happened. I was watching a video and once the video is over, YouTube shows you a new video. I am not sure at the time how I discovered the channel that honestly started lifting the surrounding fog. But for the first time in months, I laughed at something new. Each day, I felt better than the previous one. But here I sit feeling the best I have in over two years. These four individuals made me want to jump back in and TRY harder than I ever have before. And that is why I am inducting The Try Guys into The Hall.
So, I know what you are thinking. How can a YouTube channel start a change in a person? Do not worry; my therapist is just as confused as you are. I remember the first video I watched too. Keith eats the menu at The Olive Garden. I remember laughing out loud for the first time in a long time at something very minimal towards the actual video. So, part of the truck roof fell a little and during post, a cartoon olive branch covered it up. And that little moment started everything.
The first videos I took in were the Keith eats the menu series. And for the first time, I found someone online who may love fried chicken as much as me. And anyone who knows me personally, fried chicken is the way to my heart and my wallet. But menu after menu, I knew I wanted to see more from this channel. And Keith happened to be the tip of the iceberg, mostly cause he is tall. And then I discovered the entire group.
Next up was Ned. Ned is always talking about his wife. If you listen to any of our podcasts here at TBK Magazine, you will know I do the same thing. Seeing the struggles of being a new parent, starting their own business, moving, renovating, a person can relate to that at any point in their life. And that is something missing from the world of entertainment.
Zach to me, may be the most lovable, Sorry Keith. Seeing Zach struggle with an autoimmune disease and how he deals with it daily is a struggle I can relate to. I started having seizures in 2010. Dealing with any illness is difficult, but willing to share that with the world is something special.
And then there is Eugene. I watched Eugene’s coming out video, and I flat out cried. I live in a state that if a person is dealing with an inner struggle with whom they are, talking about it can get you evicted. And seeing Eugene’s story play out in musical form is one of the most real pieces you will find on the internet today.
But the best videos are when all four guys are on the screen. Why? Because doing anything you love with your best friends is something dreams are made of. Seeing these four together made me realize why I made content.
The Try Guys deserve a place in our Hall for being funny, putting themselves out there to the world, and for being a reason I am still here. So, Keith, Ned, Zach, and Eugene welcome to our Hall. And thank you.
And to end, I am a little sad their closest show to me is 6 hours away, but if you have time to see The Try Guys Live… jump on it.
And to end this, I want to share some of my favorite videos from their channel which they started last year.
