There are a lot of films that came out of the 80’s that seem to have been forgotten, or at the very least aren’t a part of the conversation. I’m reticent to say that they’re “forgotten” films but at the very least they become overshadowed to the point of them being sort of left behind. I feel like this is most prevalent in comedies. Unless it was a stone cold classic or came from the Mel Brooks or Monty Python camp, it gets left by the wayside. One particular film that I’m referencing is the underrated comedy gem CLUE. The mere thought of building an entire 90-minute narrative focused around the concept of a board game seems baffling at first. Yes, murder mysteries are a dime a dozen especially during this time frame so it wasn’t a wholly foreign concept. The difficulty in adapting this property was not in the type of story it was telling but trying to wrangle together the many different outcomes and endings you could arrive at while playing CLUE in a single 90-minute film with a definitive and conclusive ending. Well they managed to do just that and the movie works like gangbusters. It’s really an amazing film and deserves to be watched by as many people possible.
All this to say that today news broke that not only are they actively working on a CLUE remake, but they’ve attached a couple of really funny dudes to the proceedings. Jason Bateman is in talks to direct and star in the forthcoming remake and he’s bringing along with him Ryan Reynolds. This is amazing news. Jason Bateman is a comedy legend and his recent body of directorial work goes a long way to showing us that this film is in very safe hands. It’s also been a very long time since Ryan Reynolds has starred in a film that didn’t feature a foul mouthed 4th wall breaking merc with a mouth or some sort of action-based comedy so this is definitely very exciting news. That’s all we have right now for you as that this story literally just broke a few hours ago. As we get in the details, we promise them to share.
