Sketch comedy has a difficult task of standing the test of time. Take Saturday Night Live, while we hold sketches such as Wayne’s World, Schweddy Balls, and My Dick in a Box in such high regards, the sketches that were topical to the time episode aired is difficult to watch. A Weekend Update segment from 88 was funny in 1988, but in 2020, it’s like watching The Weather Channel. However, some sketch comedy shows seem to find the perfect balance and find themselves in cult status. Monty Python, The Upright Citizens Brigade, In Living Color, The Kids in The Hall are a few of those shows that still resonate with crowds. And one of those shows is coming back to streaming giant Amazon.
The Kids in the Hall will have an eight-episode run on Amazon. And the show will return with all 5 of the original cast members. Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson will reprise their most famous characters for the return to the small screen. A brand new generation will be wanting to crush people’s heads, fall in love or possibly want to work at a temp agency. I am not sure about that last one, but it fits the motif.
Personal story about this show, this was the first sketch comedy show I discovered. I remember sitting at home during the summer of my youth excited for one in the afternoon. Each episode made me laugh, to this day, I still sing, “These are the Dave’s I Know.” When the news broke about the show making its return, all I could think about was the teen sitting on the couch knowing that comedy would become a dream.
30 Helens Agree the Kids in the Hall returning is some of the best pop culture news in 2020.
