Nothing says the holidays like traditions. We all have at least one when it comes to the holiday season. Some of my personal favorites growing up would have been piling into a car with some friends and driving around looking at Christmas light displays. Another would be throwing McDonald’s Holiday pies at stop signs. Look, when you are in high school, you find things to pass the time. For us, it was throwing slightly average custard filled pies that no one ate because they tasted yucky. And yes, that is a technical term.
But one thing that is for certain, television always played a roll in my holiday traditions. One of the major ones would be commercials. Those little 30 second ads implanted on the mind for a lifetime and sometimes it was not for the good. I am going to look at 5 of my favorite ads that scream Christmas is here.
5 Campbell's Soup
This is my least favorite ad of the bunch because it is creepy and weird. But it needs to be on the list. Enter a snowman outside of a house. The snowman inches inside and sits down and is given a bowl of Campbell’s chicken noodle soup. And as the snowman goes to eat the soup, he melts away revealing Alfalfa from the Little Rascals movie. I have so many questions about this ad. The biggest one being was the kids eaten by Frosty. Was the kid sitting nestled up in Frosty’s belly moving him to the dining room knowing a bowl of soup would eff up his world? Also, did mom make him clean up the melted puddle that lay on the hardwood floor? That is how a floor will warp.
The best part of waking up is an ad that will hit you in the feels. In this Folgers ad, a man breaks into his family’s house as if he were James Bond. Finds a way to quietly put presents under the tree and is greeted by his little sister. The idea to wake everyone is by making a pot of Folgers Coffee. And just like being fartled, the entire family wakes up, heads downstairs and is greeted by the member of their family. I might joke around, but this is a great ad.
What happens when Santa Claus meets a candy that melts in your mouth and not in your hand? Hilarity. The M&Ms and Santa ad is almost as perfect as you can get for a Christmas ad featuring humor and not feel good moments. Both Red and Santa hit the floor leaving Yellow to fend for himself or to call 911 because both his best friend and Santa may have a concussion.
2 Hershey Kisses
There is not much say about this one other than its candy playing ‘We Wish You Merry Christmas.’ The Hershey Kiss ad will always stand the test of time when it comes to holiday viewing habits.
1 Coca Cola Polar Bears and Santa
And of course, number one is from Coke. The Coke polar bears and Santa are part of the holiday lexicon and no one can deny it. There is just something about these ads that will put a smile on your face and some calories in your body.
