60% Of Educational Institutions Have Suffered A Ransomware Attack

With the end of summer, the “back to school” begins and both families and educational institutions prepare the last details for the start of a new course. After the boost in digitization that the educational sector carried out with the pandemic, now comes the turn of cyber protection for educational institutions, both higher and basic education.

And it is that, as revealed by Sophos, a global leader in next-generation cybersecurity, in its survey on “The State of Ransomware in Education 2022”, educational institutions of higher education and basic education are increasingly being attacked by ransomware, with 60% experiencing attacks in 2021 compared to 44% in 2020. Educational institutions faced the highest data encryption rate (73%) compared to other sectors (65%), and the longest recovery time, with 7% taking at least three months to recover, almost twice the average time for other sectors (4%).

The results of the survey also include:
Educational institutions report the highest propensity to experience business and operational impacts from ransomware attacks compared to other sectors. 97% of higher education and 94% of basic education respondents say the attacks affected their ability to operate, while 96% of higher education and 92% of basic education respondents in the private sector they also report loss of business and income.

Only 2% of educational institutions recovered all their encrypted data after paying a ransom (vs. 4% in 2020); schools, on average, were able to recover 62% of encrypted data after paying ransoms (up from 68% in 2020). Higher education institutions, in particular, report the longest ransomware recovery time: while 40% say it takes at least a month to recover (20% for other sectors), 9% report it takes three to six months.

“Schools are hit hardest by ransomware. They are prime targets for attackers because they generally lack strong cybersecurity defenses and are a goldmine for the personal data they hold ,” says Chester Wisniewski, Scientist Sophos principal investigator.

“Educational institutions are less likely than others to detect attacks in progress, which naturally leads to higher attack success and encryption rates. Considering the encrypted data is likely to be sensitive student records, the impact is far greater than most sectors would experience.

Even if a portion of the data is recovered, there is no guarantee what data the attackers will return, and even then, the damage has already been done, further burdening schools that have been attacked with high recovery costs and, sometimes even bankruptcy. Unfortunately, these attacks are not going to stop, so the only way forward is to prioritize deploying anti-ransomware defenses to identify and mitigate attacks before encryption is possible.”

Interestingly, educational institutions report the highest cyber insurance payout rate on ransomware claims (100% higher education, 99% basic education). However, as a whole, the sector has one of the lowest rates of cybersecurity coverage against ransomware (78% vs. 83% for other sectors).

” Four in 10 schools say fewer insurance providers are offering them coverage , while nearly half (49%) report that the level of cybersecurity they need to achieve coverage has increased,” explains Wisniewski. “Insurance providers are becoming more selective when it comes to accepting clients, and educational institutions need help meeting these higher standards. With limited budgets, schools must work closely with trusted security professionals to ensure that resources are allocated to the right solutions that will deliver the best security outcomes and also help meet insurance standards.”

Based on the survey results, Sophos cybersecurity experts recommend the following best practices for protecting all organizations across all industries:

Install and maintain high-quality defenses at all points in the environment . Review security controls regularly and ensure they continue to meet the needs of the organization

Perform proactive threat hunting to identify and stop adversaries before they can execute attacks. If the IT team lacks the time or skills to do it in-house, outsource to a Managed Detection and Response (MDR) team

Harden the IT environment by finding and closing major security gaps : unpatched devices, unprotected machines, and open RDP ports, for example. Extended Detection and Response (XDR) solutions are ideal for this purpose

Prepare for the worst, and have an up-to-date response plan for a worst-case incident scenario. Finally, make backup copies, and practice restoring from them beforehand to ensure that the interruption and recovery time are as little as possible.

To finish, we also recommend this app, which has been developed by the Spanish Society of Smoking Specialists (SEDET) . This app has several sections, first it collects the user’s profile and their smoking habits, and then it offers information to end the habit of smoking , it collects statistics and data on what you lose both financially and in terms of health.

Sacabo allows you to mark the day you want to quit smoking, but first it helps you to do it gradually. Give recommendations to avoid relapse, such as if you smoke in the morning, change your routine to eliminate the moment of the cigarette. In turn, and like the first app that we have mentioned, it also has an emergency button in the event that the user is going to relapse.

Quitting smoking is a hard and complicated process, but the benefits are very high, so much so that, according to the director of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes, Thierry Philip, “If Europeans under the age of 20 quit smoking tomorrow, mortality from cancer would be cut in half in 50 years.

New TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 Travels Through Time

The story of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 model continues. Since its relaunch last year, TAG Heuer’s luxury tool watch has rewritten the design and performance codes of sports watches, pushing its wearers beyond limits in search of ever greater performance.

And now comes another new chapter with a refined and colorful vision of the GMT function. The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT is the ultimate go-anywhere watch , with a powerful yet hugely versatile design built for crossing time zones and diving and surfing the world over.

day and night
In addition to its confident and steely look, the most striking thing about the new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT is its elegant blue, yellow and white color palette . TAG Heuer designers carefully selected these playful hues to represent the sky, the sun, the water, and the waves breaking near the shore. These colors also make the watch the perfect daily companion for surfers and divers who travel the world in search of the perfect wave and the most spectacular underwater habitats.

The imposing dial, which continues to feature its characteristic horizontal lines, is a deep midnight blue that contrasts with the white lumen-filled hands and hour markers. The tip of the rhodium-plated central seconds hand is lacquered in yellow and has a luminous insert to inform divers of the operation of the watch during a dive.

The bi – directional rotating bezel is coated in highly scratch – and fade – resistant ceramic . To distinguish day from night, it has two colors: half in a dark blue, which matches the dial and represents the night hours from 6 in the afternoon to 6 in the morning; and the other half in bright white to represent the daytime hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For absolute clarity and legibility, the 24-hour GMT scale is etched into the ceramic and then coated with contrasting colors: black for day and white for night.

In pursuit of the highest quality and readability, no detail has been overlooked. For example, the numbers 18 and 6 split at the point where the blue and white pottery meet, yet the color reversal in both numbers is perfectly reflected. The GMT hand, which makes a complete revolution of the dial once every 24 hours and is adjusted via the crown, is lacquered in yellow and has luminous material on the tip.

The result is a highly legible GMT wristwatch conceived and designed for the urban adventurer who, in pursuing a life on the waves, always pushes the limits.

Under the skin
Beyond these fresh and dynamic details and the addition of a second time zone, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT model maintains the same form and functionality of the acclaimed automatic watch introduced last year.

The instantly recognizable 12-facet bezel remains the link between the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional family and previous generations. And as before, all other facets have a knurled edge so the user can grip and adjust the bezel with ease and confidence. The crown is once again screwed down and protected, and the 43mm case continues to offer 300 meters of water resistance.

Followers of TAG Heuer Aquaracer history will recognize how these details fit with the brand’s six characteristics introduced in the 1980s and perpetuated in the original 2004 TAG Heuer Aquaracer model: a unidirectional rotating bezel, a screw-down crown, resistance water resistant to at least 200 meters, luminous markings, a sapphire crystal and a double safety clasp. Divers, surfers and adventurers have come to rely on these features .

Like the core of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300, the case back of the new watch is conceived in steel, with a repeating hexagonal design and the famous diving bell that also first appeared on the TAG Heuer Aquaracer case. in 2004. Another example of the exacting attention to detail applied to the new family of TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional watches is that they have been designed so that the bottom of the case is square , which means that the diving bell is always in an upright position.

One watch, two looks
The new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT is available with a stainless steel bracelet or a midnight blue rubber strap to match the dial and bezel. Both feature TAG Heuer’s ergonomic fit system, so the watch can be easily adapted to be worn over a diving suit or simply to adjust to changes in comfort as temperatures rise or fall. The designers have endeavored to follow Jack Heuer’s goal to ensure optimum legibility in this maritime watch.

power play
With all these aesthetic details, each chosen to maximize the watch’s performance, the new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT also needed an ultra-reliable movement. So inside the watch is the TAG Heuer Caliber 7, a Swiss-made automatic movement with a power reserve of up to 50 hours. It also provides the watch with its date function, located at 6 o’clock and under a “Cyclops” magnifying glass.

Beyond the limit
The introduction of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT watch signals the next phase in the evolution of the new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional family, which also includes the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 collection. It takes up the six distinctive features of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch and combines the requirements of utility and luxury in unison . For surfers, divers and adventurers who cross time zones, it’s the ultimate luxury watch.

Greece Gets Rid Of Post-Bailout Control Despite Crisis

The Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, assured at the beginning of the summer in the European Parliament that Greece “has regained control of its economy”. The Greek leader was pleased to be able to inaugurate a “new era” after the hard journey between austerity and reforms due to the crisis and the rescue that the country suffered in the past decade.

The European Commission has definitively put an end to the process of reinforced surveillance of Greek finances this Saturday, August 20, thus returning the country to ‘normal’ supervision from Brussels, the same to which the rest of the countries are periodically subjected.

“Greece has made significant progress and as a result has returned to a normal financial situation,” Greek Finance Minister Christos Staikouras celebrated when Brussels officially announced its decision a week ago.

As Mitsotakis recalled, ” in 2015 Greece was one step away from the abyss of leaving Europe “, after a rescue of 288.7 billion euros, the largest financial assistance in history, which cost it the obligation to take unprecedented austerity measures and a subsequent reinforced control by the European Commission that has been extended until this weekend.

A more open and competitive economy
Since then, Athens has promoted reforms in the public sphere, the labor market or taxation. However, for example, it has not managed to diversify its economy, which is highly dependent on tourism .

According to Oxford Economics economist Ricardo Amaro, who has been following the Greek economy in recent years, the Greek economy is now “more open, more competitive and much more capable of attracting foreign investment.” In addition, he highlights the “significant progress” in correcting macroeconomic imbalances such as the deficit.

For all this, last April, on its last trip to Athens , the Commission found that the growth forecast for the Greek economy remained strong for 2023 despite the global crisis and escalating prices and considered that the risks had diminished significantly, so tight surveillance was no longer warranted.

An economy still vulnerable
And Athens already celebrates economic independence from Brussels. With the end of control (and new elections in sight) the Greek government has announced, for example, the first increase in pensions for more than a decade.

However, the country’s economy continues to lag behind and many of its structural problems remain to be resolved, which makes it particularly vulnerable to the shocks that the European economies as a whole are currently suffering. Although it has been recovering (its GDP fell from 224,000 million euros in 2010 to 174,000 million in 2016), its GDP per capita is one of the lowest in the Eurozone , and its total economy is 22% far from its 2007 peak.

In addition, unemployment remains at levels well above the eurozone average (it closed 2021 above 14%, double that of the Nineteen), although in turn far from the 28% that it touched in 2013. And although It is far from the 45% of youth unemployment registered at the time, young Greeks also find serious difficulties in working without having to leave. All this at a time when high inflation is also hitting Greece, where prices rose 11.3% in July.

The debt problem
“There is still a long way to go”, concludes Amaro, who highlights that the Greek economy is still ” vulnerable in a good number of areas “, such as public debt, the banking sector or demographic trends that are very unfavorable to the potential growth of the GDP. Certainly one of the issues that most worries Greece is its level of public debt , which closed 2021 at 193% of its GDP.

It is worrying because the Greek bond remains the only one with a ‘junk ‘ rating, although it is only one step away from rising to investment grade. Greek sovereign debt continues to be one of the most expensive in the eurozone, with ten-year bond yields standing at 3.7% last Friday, well above Germany’s 1.2%.

The Oxford Economics expert is clear that this is a good step for Greece, for example to get rid of the stigma , but admits that further work is needed to correct economic vulnerabilities and achieve sustainable growth.

China Tests World’s First Maglev Aerial Train

China tests world’s first maglev aerial train. There is no contact between the rail and the convoy. Uses powerful magnets with rare earth elements.

Although we are not yet moving around on flying cars and skateboards like in Blade Runner or Back to the Future, it seems that the future is getting closer. This is demonstrated by China, which has tested the world’s first magnetic levitation aerial train . Unlike traditional lines, it requires a minimal amount of power and there is no contact between the rail and the convoy .

The new experimental line is located in the province of Jiangxi, in southern China, and is currently 800 meters long. Its peculiarity lies in the use of powerful magnets rich in rare earth elements, which allows it to generate a constant repulsion force powerful enough to move a train suspended 10 meters from the ground with 88 passengers and at a speed of 80 km/h. h, as published by China Central television .

To generate this suspension, researchers at the Jiangxi University of Science and Technology have built an arm with permanent magnets on the train that surrounds and repels those on the rail. In this way, the convoy moves with hardly any electricity, hardly generates electromagnetic radiation and, in addition, reduces its construction cost to a tenth of the usual ones .

However, it also has some other drawbacks. The main challenge facing the researchers is to maintain the stability of the train in a floating state without power . On the other hand, the strong electromagnetic field that allows the train to be suspended can also affect the environment and people living near the tracks. To which is added the fact that, despite the fact that these magnets are more durable than traditional ones, the extraction of rare earths is highly polluting.

Looking to the future, the plan of the Chinese authorities is to extend the line to 7.5 km and its maximum operating speed to 120 km/h . In addition, other Chinese cities are also building or planning to bet on this technology. In some cases, the trains can reach 600 km/h, according to the South China Morning Post .

Currently, China controls 70% of the world’s rare earth market – a figure that the White House lowers to 55% – and, in addition, is the main responsible for turning them into magnets, according to analysts consulted by The Wall Street Journal . The 17 chemical elements that compose them are highly valued for their magnetic and conductive properties, essential for the automobile industry and numerous electronic devices.

Miso Aspires To Become The Amazon Of Home Cleaning Services

In the middle of 2022, everything is possible. Years ago it seemed distant to us -receiving the purchase in less than an hour, paying with the mobile or having access to products from anywhere in the world- has become part of our day to day in a very short time.

For that reason, the logical thing was for someone to take out an application to hire cleaning services. That someone is Victor Ching and the app is called Miso (“smile” in Korean), a platform that has managed more than 5 million reservations since 2015 and aspires to become the Amazon of home services .

The approach is simple. Miso connects users with regular home cleaning, laundry, pet care, and even one-off jobs like moving and repairs . Currently, the app has more than 500,000 paying customers and 50,000 different service providers , Ching tells Forbes .

Although its founder has refused to give specific figures, he has shared that gross reserves went from 47 million in 2020 to more than 128 million dollars last year . In Ching’s opinion, “there is a huge market for services” with “great potential” for further growth in the future. A perspective that is also shared by investors. Since 2015, Miso has raised more than $11 million in various funding rounds, involving high-profile investors such as Silicon Valley incubator Y Combinator and Strong Ventures.

Now, Ching has set out to move the app and the 70 services it offers abroad. Among the options being considered are Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam . Since home services are “very local,” the app’s founder prefers to partner with established providers in the spaces he wants to break into, rather than just launching a Chinese or Bahasa Indonesian version of Miso.

Regarding the financing of said expansion, the platform is preparing a new series B round for this year with which it intends to raise 30 million dollars . Likewise, he is clear that he wants Miso to go public in the future , but for the moment he is focused on making the leap to the international market.

The home cleaning service platform is not Ching’s first business venture. In 2014, she co-founded a dating app called Chinchin that disappeared two years later. According to the businessman, this failure helped him learn an important lesson: it doesn’t matter “the external validation of investors or the press”, “the only thing that matters is that customers love your product” . This is precisely the philosophy he follows when directing Miso.

A 17-Year-Old Develops An Engine That Can Revolutionize Electric Cars

The effects of climate change are being felt all over the planet – from the continuous heat waves that scorch Europe and the US, to floods in China and New Zealand – and show more than ever the need to commit to the energy transition.

For example, definitively abandoning combustion cars to bet on those with an electric motor. However, this is not so easy, since its manufacture requires the use of rare earths, an expensive raw material in economic and environmental terms. This problem could have been solved by Robert Sansone, a young engineer who was only 17 years old.

Starting from the design of a synchronous reluctance motor -used in pumps and fans- Sansone has managed to create a prototype with greater rotation force and efficiency than the existing ones in a year. The young student chose to base himself on this type of motor because, unlike electric motors with permanent magnets, they move thanks to a steel rotor with air gaps that generates power when it rotates with the magnetic field .

Sansone’s prototype is a scale model made of 3D-printed plastic, copper wires, and a steel rotor , and features another magnetic field, rather than air chambers. In this way, it has increased the power (39%) and efficiency (31%) of the engine at 300 revolutions per minute (RPM). At 750 RPM, the performance goes up to 37%.

According to Smithsonian magazine , the design has other components that make this increase possible, but the young engineer cannot reveal more details because he plans to patent it.

Although the results of this prototype are promising, the obstacles it faces must also be highlighted. At the moment, you cannot go above the aforementioned RPMs because the plastic parts overheat and melt . On the other hand, it is true that the materials for synchronous reluctance motors are cheap, but the machines themselves are difficult to manufacture, which increases their cost . In that sense, Sansone believes that new technologies, such as additive manufacturing , will make it easier to build in the future.

After winning first prize – and $75,000 – at this year’s Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, the young engineer has now set out to make a new version of his engine out of stronger materials. If it works, he will go ahead with the patent process .

Biden Waters Millions To The Electric Car Industry

The new Inflation Reduction Law contemplates a series of incentives and subsidies to reequip battery and electric vehicle factories and build new ones. Companies like Tesla, General Motors, Ford Motor, Volkswagen or Panasonic could benefit from the initiative.

The legislative machinery of the United States has not stopped in August, since in four months there will be parliamentary elections in the North American country. If last week Joe Biden signed the CHIPS Act to boost production and research in the field of semiconductors, the president this week signed the Inflation Reduction Act , which “will reduce costs for families, combat the climate crisis , it will reduce the deficit and, finally, it will ask the largest companies to pay their fair share [of taxes]”, as described by the White House rule on its website.

The bill approved by the Senate and later signed by Biden reserves more than 15,000 million dollars to reequip battery and electric vehicle factories and build new ones, according to The Wall Street Journal published a few days ago .

However, what has not been liked in the automobile industry is that the law also makes it more difficult for consumers to access tax deductions for the purchase of an electric vehicle. ” The tax relief could especially benefit Tesla for its huge market share of electric vehicles, approximately 70% of sales in the United States,” according to the investment bank Evercore ISI, in information collected by the Journal .

The tax subsidy would make Tesla models cheaper than the gasoline vehicles that still dominate the lines of traditional rivals.

However, incentives and subsidies for the production of electric vehicles could benefit, in addition to Tesla, other American car manufacturers, such as General Motors and Ford Motor , as well as companies involved in the manufacture of electric batteries and charging stations. , case of Albemarle , Honeywell International and NextEra Energy ; but also foreign firms with factories on North American soil, such as the German Volkswagen and the Japanese Panasonic .

Indeed, Panasonic – one of Tesla’s main suppliers – announced at the end of July that it was building a $4 billion electric vehicle battery factory in Kansas as a way to compete in the increasingly competitive field of electric vehicles. batteries and ease the pioneer’s reliance on electric vehicles, Forbes reported. This is his second factory there (he has another in Nevada).

However, there are those who believe that the charging infrastructure is still insufficient to switch to an electric model. Sales of electric and plug – in hybrid vehicles in the US doubled to exceed 600,000 during 2021 , with sales figures showing electric vehicles have reached 6.6% of total cars sold in recent weeks as they rise gasoline prices,” explains Christopher Gannatti, WisdomTree’s global director of analytics.

“Outside of California -indicates the expert-, the network of chargers necessary to serve millions of electric vehicles does not yet exist. The Biden Administration is betting on the installation of 500,000 public chargers by 2030, but McKinsey & Co. estimates that they will need around 1.2 million”.

If you are considering investing in this sector, you should know that companies such as General Motors, Albemarley, and NextEra Energy receive a buy recommendation from the consensus of analysts compiled by FactSet. Still, in the case of GM, Deutsche Bank’s research team downgraded its advice from buy to hold a few weeks ago.

“While earnings should improve in the second half of the year, benefiting from higher volume as supply bottlenecks are resolved, we believe these should not be capitalized on amid the eventual high risk to commodity prices. vehicles ,” they pointed out.

“At the same time, despite GM’s encouraging progress in sourcing battery materials, we are concerned that EV margins could continue to weigh heavily on the company’s overall profitability in the near term, until the automaker can introduce its next-generation technology and ramp up output at its battery plants to full capacity,” Deutsche Bank warned.

Something similar was pointed out by the German entity about Ford Motor: “We are concerned about the impact that its electric vehicles could have on the company’s profitability in the coming years, amid considerable negative contribution margins from its electric vehicle portfolio, at least until its second generation.

What happens with these firms will have to do with the price of lithium, used for the production of batteries. “The possible trajectory of lithium prices has large impacts, for example, shares of companies such as General Motors and Ford Motor Company may be affected if investors believe that lithium prices will remain elevated for a longer period,” he warns. Gannatti.

Thus, Albemarle, which is one of the largest suppliers of lithium for electric car batteries, will increase its production capacity by 85% this year. For Deutsche Bank, “lithium will continue to be a license for Albemarle to print money in the future.”

Six Funds Achieve More Than Double The Profitability Of The Ibex

The latest streak of rises in the Spanish stock market, one of the longest in the last century and which was cut short on Wednesday, has allowed the Ibex 35 with dividends, which includes payments from listed companies, for a few moments until Tuesday. turned positive in the year, with a rise of 0.38% .

In that same period, up to six actively managed Spanish stock exchange funds are capable of more than doubling this return, with data up to August 16 (latest available to be able to compare the performance of all products).

Their names sound strong since the beginning of the year. In the lead, and a long way from the next, remains azValor AM’s Iberian fund, azValor Iberia, the only one to maintain a double-digit return so far this year. Since January, it has offered a return of more than 17% to its participants. Behind this vehicle are Sigma Inv. House FCP Equity Spain A Cl, with 8.26%; Iberian Value, with 7.23%; Mutuafund Spain A, with 5.23%; Santander Acciones Españolas A, with 4.76% and Cobas Iberia C, with 3.36%.

All of them occupy the same position as a week ago in the Active Management League of elEconomista, which brings together Spanish stock funds in which at least 60% of their portfolio is decorrelated from the reference index (see graph). . However, there have been changes in the top ten positions.

For example, the seventh, which until a week ago belonged to Magallanes Iberian Equity M, the fund managed by Iván Martín, which is also a classic among those that follow a value management style, is now occupied by Sabadell España Bolsa Futuro Base. However, the Magallanes fund has managed to leave behind the losses that were recorded days ago.

The eighth, ninth and tenth position have also changed hands. Two funds from the BBVA manager have climbed positions. These are BBVA Bolsa and BBVA Bolsa Plus, which rose by nearly half a percentage point in the year. In its place, Horos Value Iberia , which is also one of the vehicles that has best resisted this year, has dropped two steps, remaining within the top 10, and with an even better performance than that of the Ibex 35.

Average losses of 1.7%
In spite of everything, the active management funds of the Spanish stock market have registered, on average, losses of 1.7% so far this year, higher than those of the Ibex with dividends. In the lower part of the classification continues the fund of small listed companies managed by Lola Solana, with a decrease of 10%. And enters, in the last three positions, the fund managed by Gonzalo Sánchez in Gesconsult: Gesconsult Renta Variable, which in the long term offers an annualized return of more than 7% over a period of ten years. This vehicle yields 7% so far this year.
